Francisco Zelada

Francisco Zelada (1790-9 July 1863) was an Argentine colonel who served in the Army of the Andes during the Argentine Civil Wars.

Biography[]

Francisco Zelada was born in Colonia del Sacramento, Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata in 1790. He joined the Spanish Army at the age of 11 and fought off the British invasions of the Rio de la Plata before serving under Hilarion de la Quintana in the Banda Oriental and fighting at the Battle of Cerrito. In 1814, he joined the Argentine Patriots' Army of the North and fought at the Battle of Viluma before commanding a column that crossed the Andes to Chile and captured Copiapo. He later fought at the Battle of Maipu, and he settled in San Juan Province and fought for Juan Bautista Bustos against Jose Miguel Carrera during the Argentine Civil Wars. He retired to livestock farming before dying in 1863.
