
Francisco Jose Furtado (13 August 1818-23 June 1870) was Prime Minister of Brazil from 31 August 1864 to 12 May 1865, succeeding Zacarias de Gois e Vasconcelos and preceding Pedro de Araujo Lima.
Biography[]
Francisco Jose Furtado was born in Oeiras, Piaui, Brazil in 1818, and he served as a judge before becoming a leader of thet Liberal Party of Brazil. He served as President of Amazonas from 1856 to 1859 and served as Prime Minister from 1864 to 1865, settling a dispute with Uruguay and declaring war on Paraguay at the start of the Paraguayan War. Furtado also tirelessly worked towards the abolition of slavery, and he died in 1870 at the age of 51.
