Francisco Madero

Francisco Ignacio Madero Gonzalez (30 October 1873 – 22 February 1913) was President of Mexico from 6 November 1911 to 19 February 1913, succeeding Francisco Leon de la Barra and preceding Pedro Lascurain.

Biography[]

Madero was a Coahuilan landowner, born to a peasant family. In 1910 he was imprisoned after becoming leader of the opposition to dictator Porfirio Diaz running another term, and from jail, he called on a Mexican Revolution. In 1911 he escaped jail and led his troops in battle, capturing Ciudad Juarez, and he became President after Diaz fled to France. Having just turned 38, he was one of Mexico's youngest presidents. However, Madero's revolution set off a series of uprisings across Mexico, each led by an ambitious revolutionary leader seeking power for himself. In 1913 Emiliano Zapata, aided by Pancho Villa and Victoriano Huerta, overthrew Madero's government by capturing Mexico City from the Maderistas. Francisco Madero was imprisoned alongside his Vice-President, and he was taken to a penitentiary in Mexico City. However, he was gunned down by assailants along with the Vice-President as his car, heavily escorted, reached the jail.
