
Francisco Diez Canseco (21 March 1821-5 October 1884) was President of Peru from 26 to 27 July 1872, succeeding Tomas Gutierrez and preceding Mariano Herencia Zevallos.
Biography[]
Francisco Diez Canseco was born in Arequipa, Peru in 1821, the brother of Pedro Diez Canseco and the brother-in-law of Ramon Castilla. He joined the Peruvian Army in 1835 and served under Castilla during the War of the Confederation, the Peruvian-Bolivian War of 1841-42, against Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco's conservative revolution, and for Domingo Nieto and Castilla's liberal revolutions. From 1857 to 1861, Diez served as Governor of the Chincha Islands, and he became prefect of Callao in 1861. In 1863, he was promoted to brigadier-general and defended against Mariano Ignacio Prado and his own brother Pedro's revolution. He later served as Jose Balta's Vice President and served as acting president for a day after Balta's assassination, ultimately handing over power to Mariano Herencia Zevallos after Tomas Gutierrez was lynched. He went on to serve as Minister of War and Navy, and he disciplined reserve units during the War of the Confederation. He died in 1884.
