Francis Lewis

Francis Lewis (21 March 1713 – 31 December 1802) was an American Founding Father from New York and a signer of the US Declaration of Independence.

Biography[]

Francis Lewis was born in Llandaff, Wales in 1713, and he worked as a merchant in London before emigrating to New York City in 1734. He made trans-Atlantic voyages to Scotland, Russia, and other European countries during his mercantile career, and he served in the New York provincial congress and in the Continental Congress at the start of the American Revolutionary War. He signed the US Declaration of Independence in 1776, and he died in 1802.
