Francis Bellamy

Francis Bellamy (1726-1789) was the first Naval Secretary of the United States. He was succeeded by Marfidy Willis.

Biography[]

Born in Pennsylvania to a Scottish-American family, Bellamy's paternal grandparents first arrived in Philadelphia after the Jacobite Uprising of 1745. Bellamy originally served as an admiral during the American Revolutionary War and became the first Secretary of the Navy for the United States after the war's end in 1783.
