Fort Wadsworth

Fort Wadsworth was a Union Army siege fortification which was erected near Petersburg, Virginia during the Petersburg campaign of the American Civil War. The fort was built following the Battle of the Weldon Railroad in 1864, and it anchored the extreme left of the Union siege lines for more than a month. The fort secured the Union grip on the Petersburg & Weldon Railroad, a major Confederate supply line. The fort was nearly a mile away from the closest Confederates, making guard duty at Fort Wadsworth an easy task. It was preserved as part of the Petersburg National Battlefield.
