Fort Laramie was a significant trading post and diplomatic site located in the upper Platte River Valley of Wyoming in the United States, named for the fur trader Jacques La Ramee. The fort was built in 1834 as a private fur trading post, but in 1841 it was purchased by the American Fur Company and again in 1849 by the US Army, becoming a base from which the government could protect wagon trains along the Oregon Trail. Fort Laramie have a central role in Red Cloud's War in 1867 and the Great Sioux War of 1876, and the fort was the location of the signing of the treaty that ended Red Cloud's War.
