Fort Edistow

Fort Edistow was an English colonial fort which was located near present-day Pawleys Island, South Carolina. The fort was established by Alexander Whittome in 1647, serving as a coastal outpost which guaranteed English control over the Province of Carolina's coast. However, the colony soon came into conflict with the Spanish outpost of Fortin Cusabo, and Whittome led a party of English and Indian soldiers to evict the Spanish, resulting in the Battle of Fortin Cusabo and the destruction of the Spanish colony.
