Fort Charles

Fort Charles was a British Royal Navy fort in Port Royal, Jamaica which was built in 1655. The fort was built to guard the entrance to Port Royal's natural harbor, and it was originally named "Fort Cromwell" in honor of Oliver Cromwell, who had presided over the seizure of Jamaica from Spain as part of his "Western Design"; on the Restoration, the fort was renamed in honor of King Charles II of England. By 1667, the fort had 36 guns; this was upped to 104 guns and 500 men by 1765. The fort was damaged by earthquakes in 1692 and 1907, but it was repaired and still stands tall.
