Florence, also known as Firenze, is the capital and largest city of the Italian region of Tuscany, having a population of 1,520,000 people in 2016. The city was founded by the Etruscans in 200 BC as Fiesole, and it was known as Florentia under Roman rule. During the Middle Ages, Florence was a center of European trade and finance, and it became the birthplace of the Renaissance; the House of Medici assisted the Renaissance by giving its patronage to artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Niccolo Machiavelli. Today, it is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world due to its amazing architecture.
