The First Schleswig War (24 March 1848-8 May 1852) was a war fought between Prussia and the rebellious forces of Schleswig and Holstein and Denmark. The disputed territories of Schleswig and Holstein rebelled against Danish rule, and the German populations in the two regions decided that they wanted to join the German Confederation. Prussia and Denmark skirmished with each other for four years, and the Danes surprisingly managed to withstand the might of the German armies sent to invade Schleswig and Jutland. In 1852, Denmark and Prussia signed a peace treaty, restoring the status quo. Further disagreements over the regions would lead to the Second Schleswig War of 1864.
