The First Republic of Venezuela was a short-lived independent republic set up in New Granada in 1811 during the South American Wars of Liberation. Assisted by generals Simon Bolivar, Francisco de Paula Santader, and others, the republic declared its independence from Spain and fought for its freedom, but was overwhelmed in 1812 in a royalist reaction led by Domingo de Monteverde. Despite being short-lived, Venezuela was the first Spanish American colony to declare its independence.
