The First Battle of Troyanovo was a major battle of the Russo-Turkish War of 1805, taking place in early June 1805 in Troyanovo, Bulgaria. The Russian general Fyodor Buxhoewden and 6,800 troops defeated an army of 5,400 Ottoman troops under Yusuf Hamid who were marching to relieve General Hafiz Hassan's army in Burgas, destroying the Ottoman army.
Background[]
The Russian general Fyodor Buxhoewden and his army invaded Rumelia (present-day Bulgaria and European Turkey) in May 1805, crushing General Hafiz Hassan's army at the Battle of Nevestino. The Russian army of 6,800 troops then encamped west of the city of Burgas, where Hassan's army had retreated to. Hassan had only a few troops left, so he called for reinforcements. Yusuf Hamid and 5,400 Ottoman troops marched out of Istanbul and moved on Burgas to aid their comrades. Given the opportunity to intercept the Ottomans, Buxhoewden attacked them.
Battle[]
The Ottoman army was intercepted, but Hassan's army was also engaged in the battle. The Russian army, better trained than the Ottoman Orta (mob) firelock-armed populace, devastated the Turkish army. Hassan was killed, losing 6,630 dead while Buxhoewden lost only 1,680 dead.
