The First Battle of Artois occurred from December 1914 to January 1915 when the French Army launched a failed offensive against the Imperial German Army at Artois to break the stalemate in Flanders. The battle followed the bloody First Battle of Ypres, and General Joseph Joffre ignored the heavy losses suffered by his forces in favor of launching an assault against the German positions at Artois. Bad weather and logistical problems interrupted the French offensive, and they made meager territorial gains by the time that the offensive had come to a close in January 1915.
