Filipp Afanasievich Ershakov (9 January 1893-9 June 1942) was a Lieutenant-General who commanded the Soviet 22nd Army and the Soviet 20th Army during World War II.

Biography[]

Filipp Afanasievich Ershakov was born on 9 January 1893 in Taganka, Smolensk Governorate, Russian Empire. He served in the Imperial Russian Army during World War I, and he joined the Bolsheviks in 1919 while serving in the Red Army during the Russian Civil War. In 1938, he took command of the Ural Military District, and he became the commander of the Soviet 22nd Army at the start of Operation Barbarossa during World War II. His army was defeated at Smolensk and Polotsk before being encircled in the Vyazma Pocket, and he was captured by the Wehrmacht. He died in the Hammelburg concentration camp in Nazi Germany in June 1942.
