Wimbledon is a town in the London Borough of Merton in Greater London, England, located 7.1 miles south-west of Charing Cross. Wimbledon was the site of a Brythonic hillfort during the Iron Age, and, by 1087, Wimbledon was part of the Norman manor of Mortlake. Wimbledon attracted several wealthy families, and nobility and wealthy merchants from the City of London settled in the same area as traditionally-rural villagers. In the 18th century, the Dog and Fox pub became a stop on the stagecoach route from London to Portsmouth, and, in 1838, the London and South Western Railway opened a station at Wimbledon Hill in the southeast. In 1965, Wimbledon and surrounding parts of Surrey were absorbed into Greater London, and it became home to sizable Sri Lankan, Ghanaian, Polish, and Irish populations. By 2011, Wimbledon had 68,187 residents.
