South Dakota is a state in the Midwest of the United States, named for the Dakota and Lakota Sioux tribes of the region. Bisected by the Missouri River, South Dakota has fertile land, including the Black Hills (where Mount Rushmore is located) and the eastern parts of the state. In the late 19th century, white settlers pushed the Sioux out of South Dakota after the Great Sioux War and the 1890 Wounded Knee massacre, and South Dakota was admitted to the unionon 2 November 1889 as the 40th state. Pierre is the capital, and Sioux Falls is the largest city; in 2015, South Dakota had a population of 858,469 people. Similarly to North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Indiana, a lot of people from South Dakota have ancestry from German-speaking countries, the Low Countries, and Scandinavia.
