Mike Stepovich

Michael Anthony Stepovich (12 March 1919-14 February 2014) was the Republican Governor of the Alaska Territory from 5 June 1957 to 1 August 1958, interrupting Waino Hendrickson's terms.

Biography[]

Michael Anthony Stepovich was born in Fairbanks, Alaska Territory in 1919, the son of a Montenegrin immigrant miner and his Croatian wife. He was raised in Portland, Oregon and served in the US Navy during World War II before becoming a lawyer in Fairbanks, Alaska and serving as its Republican city attorney. He went on to serve as Governor of the Alaska Territory from 1957 to 1958, successfully lobbying for Alaskan statehood. He resigned in 1958 to run for the US Senate, but his bid to be one of Alaska's inaugural Senators was unsuccessful, as was his 1962 and 1966 gubernatorial bids. He died in 2014 at the age of 94.
