Flag of Florida

Florida is a state located in the American South region of the United States. Bordering the Gulf of Mexico to the southwest, Alabama to the northwest, the state of Georgia to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Caribbean Sea to the south (Cuba is just 90 miles away from Florida's southernmost point), Florida was first settled in 1513 by Juan Ponce de Leon and named for the flowers there. It has the longest coastline in the contiguous USA, and Jacksonville is the largest city in America by area. In 2015, Florida had a population of 20,271,272 people, having a significant population of Hispanics (mostly Cuban refugees and Mexicans), making up 23.6% of the population in 2013. The state capital is Tallahassee, and major cities include Orlando, Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami.
