Fikret Abdic (29 September 1939-) was President of AP Western Bosnia from 27 September 1993 to 7 August 1995 during the Bosnian War.
Biography[]
Fikret Abdic was born in Velika Kladusa, Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1939, and he served as director of Agrokomerc before the Breakup of Yugoslavia, turning it from a small agricultural cooperative into a modern food combine employing over 13,000 workers. In 1990, as a Party of Democratic Action politician, he ran for the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Abdic and his future rival Alija Izetbegovic were both elected. During the Bosnian War, he was concerned with his business interests, and he created the secessionist AP Western Bosnia, which allied with Croatia and FR Yugoslavia against Izetbegovic's Bosnian government. In 1995, his state was destroyed during Operation Storm, the decisive final action of the Croatian War of Independence. After the war, he lived in Croatia, and, in 2002, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for war crimes committed in the Bihac pocket. He was released in 2012.
