Fernando de Almada

Fernando de Almada, 2nd Count of Avranches (1430-29 April 1496) was a Portuguese nobleman who served as ambassador to the Papal States.

Biography[]

Fernando de Almada was the son of Alvaro Vaz de Almada, and he succeeded his father as Captain-Major of the Galleys in 1456. In 1476, he accompanied King Afonso V of Portugal to France, and he was made Count of Avranches by King Louis XI of France at Tours. Almada later served as ambassador to the Papal States, and Pope Alexander VI sent Cardinal Alessandro Farnese to inform Almada that the Pope would grant Portugal the rights to any lands discovered around the coast of Africa.
