Ferdinando III of Sicily (12 January 1751 – 4 January 1825) was the king of Sicily from 1759 to 1816, succeeding Carlo V and preceding Ferdinand I of Naples & Sicily. He was an ally of Ferdinando IV of Naples and joined the Third Coalition against Napoleon Bonaparte in 1805.

Biography[]

Ferdinando was the third son of King Carlos III of Spain and his wife Maria Amalia of Saxony. He was born in Naples in 1751 and was made the king of the Kingdom of Sicily in 1759 after his father abdicated from that title; his father still remained King of Spain. Ferdinando III joined the Third Coalition of 1805 against France during the Napoleonic Wars as an ally of the Austrian Empire, and the British assisted him in driving back French invasions. However, he was eventually conquered by Marshal Joachim Murat, who made himself the new King of Naples & Sicily. Ferdinando returned to power in 1815 after the Neapolitan War and his reign ended in 1816 when Naples and Sicily became the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
