Federico III da Montefeltro (7 June 1422 – 10 September 1482) was the Lord of Urbino from 1444 to 1482, succeeding Oddantonio da Montefeltro and preceding Guidobaldo da Montefeltro. He was also one of the most successful condotierri of the Renaissance.
Biography[]
The illegitimate son of Guidantonio da Montefeltro, Lord of Urbino, Federico was legitimatized by Pope Martin V shortly after his birth. Montefeltro became the lord of Urbino after his father's death in 1444, and he became a condotierro. In 1454, while serving under the Republic of Florence, he attempted to capture the walled city of Monteriggioni in Tuscany from the House of Auditore, but he failed to do so, having faced the skilled Mario Auditore in combat. He was made Duke of Urbino in 1476 and remained lord of the city until his death in 1482.
