Federico Errazuriz Echaurren

Federico Errazuriz Echaurren (16 November 1850-12 July 1901) was President of Chile from 18 September 1896 to 12 July 1901, succeeding Jorge Montt and preceding Anibal Zanartu. He was a member of the Liberal Party of Chile.

Biography[]

Federico Errazuriz Echaurren was born in Santiago, Chile on 16 November 1850, the son of President Federico Errazuriz Zanartu. He joined the Liberal Party of Chile in 1876 when he was elected a deputy for Constitucion, and he was characterized as a centrist politician. In 1890, he became Minister of War and Navy under President Jose Manuel Balmaceda, and he supported the President's deposition before the Chilean Civil War of 1891. He was elected President in 1896, and he improved relations with the neighboring countries of Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina, and he subordinated himself to the will of Congress. Due to the threat of war with Argentina, he shyed away from reimplementing bimetallism, lest it harm the economy. He died of tuberculosis in 1901, and he was succeeded by Anibal Zanartu.
