Federico Errazuriz Zanartu

Federico Errazuriz Zanartu (25 April 1825-20 July 1877) was President of Chile from 18 September 1871 to 18 September 1876, succeeding Jose Joaquin Perez and preceding Anibal Pinto. He was a leader of the Liberal Party of Chile.

Biography[]

Federico Marcos del Rosario Errazuriz Zanartu was born in Santiago, Chile on 25 April 1825 to a family of Basque descent, and he became chief of the province of Santiago in 1860. He served as Secretary of War and the Navy during the Chincha Islands War with Spain, and he went on to serve as President from 1871 to 1876. He introduced important liberal reforms such as secularizing public instruction and implementing freedom of worship, and he also abolished ecclesiastical privileges. He died in 1877, a year after retiring from office.
