The Federalist Party was a faction of Gran Colombian politics that existed from 1821 to 1831. The party, led by liberal politicians such as Francisco de Paula Santander and Jose Antonio Paez, supported federalism and greater rights for the individual regions of Gran Colombia instead of supporting a centralized government; the party was rivals with the conservative Centralist Party of Gran Colombia. The federalist secessionists failed to assassinate Simon Bolivar in 1829 and also failed in their uprisings against the government, but the nation would ultimately collapse in 1830.
