Father Selbix

Father Selbix (died 875) was a West Saxon Catholic priest in the service of King Alfred the Great, whom he crowned as king in 871. In 875, he was given to the Danes as a hostage by Alfred, and he was instructed to convert the Viking leader Guthrum to Christianity. Selbix was a cheerful and friendly priest who got along well with Uhtred of Bebbanburg, and he also encouraged Guthrum to learn more about God. However, after Guthrum received reinforcements from Ireland and London, he stabbed Selbix in the stomach in the church and had all other hostages killed as well.
