Flag of Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands is an archipelago in the northern Atlantic Ocean, located between Greenland and Iceland. The islands were owned by Norway from 1035 to 1814, when Denmark was granted the Faroes, Greenland, and Iceland in exchange for Sweden being allowed to annex Norway. In 1948, the Faroes became a self-governing country within Denmark, but Denmark influences almost every aspect of Faroese government except for trade. In 2016, the Faroe Islands had a population of 49,188 people.
