A farmer is an agricultural worker who raises livestock and/or grows crops on a farm. Farmers tend to live in the countryside, where there are open ranges and fertile ground, and they tend to be ranked among the lower classes of society; in many undeveloped societies, farmers grew only what they needed to survive as "subsistence farmers", while farmers in developed societies sold their goods at markets in addition to consuming some of their own products. During the Industrial Revolution of the 18th-19th centuries, cities rapidly expanded into the countryside, and many farmers were forced to become craftsmen, laborers, or artisans.
