The Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) is a socialist political party in El Salvador that was founded on 10 October 1980. The FMLN was formed as an umbrella group of five leftist guerrilla organizations in the country, and the FMLN resisted the US-backed Salvadoran dictatorship in the Salvadoran Civil War of 1979-1992. After the 1992 Chapultepec Peace Accords, the FMLN guerrilla was disbanded and the organization became a political party, abandoning Marxism-Leninism in favor of socialism and syndicalism. In 2017, the party held 31/84 Legislative Assembly seats, 85/262 mayorships, and 8/20 Central American Parliament seats.
