The Far Eastern Republic was a short-lived republic that existed in the Russian Far East from 6 April 1920 to 15 November 1922, with its first capital being Verkhneudinsk (until October 1920) and its second being Chita. The republic was formed with the tacit support of the Bolsheviks of the Russian SFSR during the Russian Civil War, as the republic could act as a buffer against 70,000 Imperial Japanese Army and 12,000 US Army troops that were sent to put down the communist revolution. Ruled by democratic socialists, the republic would adopt an American-style constitution on 27 April 1921, but the White Army launched a coup in the port of Vladivostok on 26 May 1921 with the assistance of Japan. In November 1922, the Japanese finally withdrew, and the Red Army took over Vladivostok. The republic was abrosbed into the Soviet Union, and it became the "Russian Far East".
