The Fante Confederacy was an alliance of Fante states in the Gold Coast that existed from 1868 to 1874, with loose alliances being formed as early as the sixteenth century. The Fante leaders were among the wealthiest and best educated of the peoples in the region, and they would fight against both the Ashanti Empire and the European settlers, although they occasionally sided with the British against the Ashanti. The 1868-1874 confederacy fell apart due to monetary problems stemming from the sale of the Dutch Gold Coast to the British, as the British purchased the Fante Confederacy's annexation in exchange for helping the Fante against the Ashanti. In 1957, the Fante protectorate was merged into the independent state of Ghana.
