Fanmi Lavalas is a social democratic and populist political party in Haiti that was founded by Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 1996 as a left-wing splintergroup of the Struggling People's Organization. Aristide opposed the neoliberal policies of the foreign-influenced OPL and sought to prevent rival politicians from taking over the movement's leadership from Aristide and other more left-wing leaders, and his party drew its strength from the urban youth and marginalized urban poor. Aristide was overthrown by the military in 1991 and again in 2004, and the party was repeatedly excluded from the democratic process in the years following the 2004 coup. Lavalas became a major opposition party during the rule of the Haitian Tet Kale Party, and its supporters were targeted by gangs in the massacres of La Saline, Bel-Air, and Cite Soleil. By the 2010s, Lavalas controlled the Grand Ravine and 5 Second gangs, opposing the PHTK-allied G9 Family and Allies gang.
