The Fall of Herat occurred on 12 August 2021 when the Taliban captured Afghanistan's third-largest city of Herat amid the 2021 Taliban offensive which ended the Afghanistan War. The Taliban started their assault by capturing the Shindand Air Base, including two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. That same night, Herat fell after a two-week siege, forcing the warlord Ismail Khan and other high-ranking government officials to seek refuge at a provincial airport and the army corps outside the city. The next morning, Khan and the others surrendered to the Taliban, and an Afghan National Army corps in Herat crumbled. The Taliban agreed to release Khan and the other officials after Khan agreed to join them, bringing the support of the Tajik community with him.
