The 16th Division was a Free Syrian Army-affiliated rebel group formed in 2013 during the Syrian Civil War. With 1,600 fighters in 2014, the group was among the groups fighting against the Syrian Arab Republic, Islamic State, Iran, Hezbollah, and the Syrian Democratic Forces in Aleppo, taking part in the indiscriminate shelling of the Kurdish Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood and killing several innocent people; the YPG retaliated in force. The 16th Division was allied with Ahrar ash-Sham, the Mountain Hawks Brigade, Levant Front, Fastaqim Kama Umirt, and Harakat Nour al-Din al-Zenki.
