The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) was a Marxist-Leninist guerrilla group in Colombia that was founded in 1964 and disbanded in 2017. FARC was founded as an army of agrarian peasants, and the group was responsible for terrorism, hostage taking, illegal mining, extortion, and selling cocaine and other drugs. In 2010, the group had 13,800 members, half of whom were guerrilla fighters. Since 1964, FARC waged a guerrilla war against the USA-backed government with the assistance of Venezuela (and formerly the USSR and Cuba), and in the 2010s it began peace talks with the government to end years of war in the dangerous country. In September 2016, FARC agreed to a ceasefire with the government, effectively ending the Colombian conflict. In 2017, FARC formed the Common Alternative Revolutionary Force party.
