Ezzeddine Sobhi Sheikh Khalil

Ezzeddine Sobhi Sheikh Khalil (24 July 1958 – 26 September 2004) was a Hamas leader during the Second Intifada.

Biography[]

Ezzeddine Sobhi Sheikh Khalil was born on 24 July 1958 in the Gaza Strip to a family of Sunni Muslim Palestinians. He joined the Muslim Brotherhood in 1980 and fought in the Soviet-Afghan War alongside Abdullah Azzam before returning home in 1990 to help in the formation of Hamas, becoming a leader of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades and a member of the political bureau. In 1992 he was imprisoned for seven months during the First Intifada, and during the Second Intifada he was marked for assassination. On 26 September 2004, Khalil was killed in a car bombing in Damascus, Syria by Israel.
