Ezra Perin Savage (3 April 1842-8 January 1920) was the Republican Governor of Nebraska from 1 May 1901 to 8 January 1903, succeeding Charles H. Dietrich and preceding John H. Mickey.

Biography[]

Ezra Perin Savage was born in Connersville, Indiana in 1842, and he served in the Union Army during the American Civil War before becoming a lawyer in 1875 and founding Sargent, Nebraska in Custer County in 1879. In 1883, he was elected to the first of two terms in the State House as a Republican, and he served as Mayor of South Omaha in 1887. In 1900, he was elected Lieutenant Governor, and he succeeded Governor Charles H. Dietrich when Dietrich was appointed to the US Senate. Savage's pardoning of the imprisoned state treasurer, who had been jailed for embezzlement, led to criticism which influenced his decision to step down at the 1902 election. He later moved to Tacoma, Washington, and he died in 1920.
