Eugen Mercy d'Argenteau

Eugen Mercy d'Argenteau (1743-4 May 1819) was a general officer of the Austrian Empire who served from 1760 until 1808.

Biography[]

At the age of seventeen, the Walloon Dutchman D'Argenteau served in the Battle of Torgau in the Seven Years' War in 1760. In 1789 he served at the Siege of Belgrade and was promoted to General-Major soon after. In 1795 he served as Chief-of-Staff of the Austrian army in Italy and was defeated at the Battle of Liguria by Napoleon Bonaparte, his first victory in Italy. In the Montenotte Campaign in 1796 he was defeated at Montenotte and Dego and lost at Caldiero in 1805. He retired in 1808 and served as a proprietor of a regiment until his death.
