The Escape through Iga occurred in 1582 during the Sengoku period. Following Mitsuhide Akechi's betrayal and murder of Nobunaga Oda at Honnoji, Ieyasu Tokugawa, who had been heading to Kyoto to visit Nobunaga, was forced to flee with a small handful of troops, intending on taking a shortcut home through Iga Province.
The Tokugawa army was forced to march a treacherous path through mountains and forests, and Ieyasu's generals Tadakatsu Honda and Hanzo Hattori set out to cut him a path through Iga and towards Mikawa Province. The Tokugawa generals defeated Yoshinari Kuwana, Chikayasu Kosokabe, Tadazumi Tami, and Nobuchika Chosokabe to clear a path for Ieyasu, and Ieyasu dispatched Tadakatsu to assist Baisetsu Anayama with rendezvousing with him. Yoshishige Fukutome attempted to slay the isolated Baisetsu, but Tadakatsu rushed to Baisetsu's aid and defeated Yoshishige. Tadakatsu managed to help Baisetsu rejoin Ieyasu, while Hanzo Hattori defeated three clones of the evil ninja Kotaro Fuma, who had attempted to murder Ieyasu. Soon, Shirojiro Chaya arrived with Tokugawa reinforcements, and the Tokugawa forces cut a path for Ieyasu to escape. Kotaro Fuma appeared one last time with the goal of preventing Ieyasu from reaching the escape point, but he was once again defeated, and Ieyasu and his army successfully exited the battlefield and returned to Mikawa Province.
