
Ernest Shonekan (9 May 1936-11 January 2022) was President of Nigeria from 26 August to 17 November 1993, succeeding Ibrahim Babangida and preceding Sani Abacha.
Biography[]
Ernest Shonekan was born on 9 May 1936 in Lagos, Nigeria. He studied law at the University of London and was called to the bar in Nigeria, and in 1980 he became Chairman of the United Africa Company of Nigeria. A proven businessman, he was chosen as the transitional President of Nigeria by Ibrahim Babangida in 1993 until democratic elections could be held. However, Sani Abacha ousted Shonekan and became a military dictator. He died in 2022 at the age of 85.
