Ernest Dumont (15 June 1895-15 March 1953) was a member of the Haitian military junta from December 1952 to March 1953 alongside Daniel Guay, Francois Durce, Matthieu Bertillon, and Aaron Vasseur.
Biography[]
Ernest Dumont was born on 15 June 1895 in Cabaret, Haiti to a middle-class family, and he attended the Haitian Military Academy in Port-au-Prince, graduating with honors in 1918. Dumont was commissioned in the Haitian Army with the rank of First Lieutenant, and he became the commander of an armored division in Gonaives. Dumont rose to the rank of Captain in 1959, and he took part in the 1950 Haitian coup d'etat against the pro-Soviet government. Because of his leadership role in the coup, he became a leader of the military junta that ruled the country afterwards. However, he began to desire power for himself, so he decided to rally some progressive elements of the army to his side for a coup. Dumont was betrayed by a soldier in his division, and on 15 March 1953 Dumont was executed by firing squad for treason.
