Eriprando of Rialto (22 December 732-11 January 793) was the patrician of the House of Monferrato in the Republic of Venice and the High Admiral of Venice before becoming a priest on 28 May 779.
Biography[]
Eriprando was born on 22 December 732 to the House of Monferrato, a dynasty of Catholic Italians. His family rose to the forefront of Venetian politics on 24 December 770, and he was one of five patricians that hoped to become the next doge of Venice. His family later fell from power, and he became a simple courtier; however, he married Anna Orsoleo, the former dogaressa with Doge Teodato of Venice. Eriprando was appointed as High Admiral of Venice by Doge Giovanni of Venice, and Eriprando was also the heir to the bishopric of Rialto.
On 28 May 779 Bishop Fosco of Rialto died of the great pox, and Eriprando succeeded to the bishopric. This forced him to divorce his wife and live in solitude as the bishop, and as his family was no longer a patrician family, this was his only landed title. He died on 11 January 793 at the age of 60 from natural causes.
