Erich Brandenberger

Erich Brandenberger (15 July 1892 – 21 June 1955) was a General der Panzertruppe of the German Wehrmacht who commanded the XXIX Armeekorps during World War II.

Biography[]

Erich Brandenberger was born on 15 July 1892 in Augsburg, Bavaria, German Empire, and he served as an officer in a field artillery regiment during World War I. He remained in the Reichswehr after the war and proceeded to become a staff officer in the Wehrmacht, serving as chief of staff of the XXIII Armeekorps from 1939 to 1941 on the Siegfried Line. He led the 8th Panzer Division during Operation Barbarossa and then led two corps during the war with the Soviet Union, and he was later sent to France to take command of the German 7th Army from Heinrich Eberbach on 3 September 1944. He led the army until 21 February 1945, taking part in the Siegfried Line campaign and the Battle of the Bulge. Brandenberger led the German 19th Army afterwards, and he surrendered to the Allied Powers on 6 May 1945. He died in Bonn, West Germany in 1955 at the age of 62.
