Epidaurus was a small city in Argolis, Greece. Founded by the angel Epidaurus, it was the home of Apollo's son Askleipos, and its Sanctuary of Askleipos was the most celebrated healing center of the Classical world. It was independent of Argos until the time of the Roman Republic, which conquered Greece during the mid-2nd century BC. The sanctuary was looted by the Roman general Sulla in 87 BC, and it was plundered by pirates in 67 BC, and the Goths raided the sanctuary in 395 AD. Even after the introduction of Christianity and the silencing of the oracles, the sanctuary was still known as a Christian healing center as late as the mid-5th century AD. In 2011, Epidaurus had a population of 1,932 people.
