Ennia Thrasylla (15-38) was a Roman noblewoman who was the wife of Praetorian Guard prefect Naevius Sutorius Macro and the lover of future Roman emperor Caligula.
Biography[]
Ennia Thrasylla was born in 15 AD, the daughter of Roman eques Lucius Ennius. Born in Creta et Cyrenaica in the Roman Empire, she was of Roman (Italian), Armenian, Greek, and Median (Middle Eastern) descent, and she was the granddaughter of Thrasyllus of Mendes. In 31, she married vigiles prefect Naevius Sutorius Macro, and she had considerable influence due to her marriage. Ennia used this post to have sexual relations with Macro's master, Prince Caligula, and the two saw each other with Macro's knowledge - even Emperor Tiberius knew of their relationship. Caligula would end their relationship in 38 AD when he had Macro executed under the pretense that Macro was responsible for the murder of Tiberius, and Ennia was banished from Rome to Gaul (France). Later, an imperial decree ordered her to commit suicide, which she did according to Roman law.
