Flag of England

The English are a Germanic ethnic group native to England in the British Isles. The English are descended from the native Britons, the Germanic Angles, Saxons, Jutes, and Frisians (collectively known as the Anglo-Saxons), the Danes, and the Normans, among other groups, and English culture is a mixture of Germanic, Celtic, and Latin traditions. The English people speak the English language, a Germanic language with some Romance influences, and the majority of them adhere to either Anglican Protestantism or are irreligious. The English people invented the English language, the Westminster system of parliamentary government, the common law system, the sandwich, and the sports of cricket, rugby, tennis, and soccer. In 2011, there were 37,600,000 English people in England and Wales, 25,000,000 in the United States, 7,200,000 in Australia, 6,600,000 in Canada, and 282,000 in New Zealand (plus many more of English descent).
