Engelschalk II (849-895) was the margrave of the March of Pannonia under East Francia. He is best-known for his war against Aribo of Austria, known as the Wilhelminer War due to Engelschalk's dynasty, the Wilhelminers, attempting to conquer the Margraviate of Austria.
Biography[]
Engelschalk was born in 849, the son of Engelschalk I of Pannonia. He was a member of the Wilhelminers, a dynasty descended from William I, the ruler of the March of Pannonia. In 871, he launched an uprising against Margrave Aribo of Austria after Aribo refused to give him his father's titles, and from 882 to 884 he fought against Aribo during the Wilhelminer War. Aribo, Svatopluk of Moravia, and Charles the Fat defeated the uprising, and he fled to the court of Arnulf of Carinthia. He was arrested and blinded by Bavarian aristocracy without Arnulf's knowledge, and he died in 895. The Wilheminers would be purged from the court of Bavaria, leading to the downfall of the family.
