Enes Kanter (20 May 1992-) was a Turkish basketball player. Born in Zurich, Switzerland to Turkish parents, he was raised in Turkey and began his basketball career with the Fenerbahce youth squad from 2006 to 2008. In 2009, he moved to the United States, and he played for the Utah Jazz from 2011 to 2015, for the Oklahoma City Thunder from 2015 to 2017, for the New York Knicks from 2017 to 2019, for the Portland Trail Blazers in 2019, and for the Boston Celtics from 2019. He was known to be a supporter of Fethullah Gulen's modernist Islamic movement, and his family disowned him due to his political views following the 2016 Turkish coup attempt; nevertheless, his father was stripped of his university position, and Kanter himself was deprived of his Turkish citizenship. He supported the 2020 Polish protests due to his support for women's rights, and he also supported Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden due to his strong stance against Turkish dictator Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his support for democracy, freedom, and human rights.
